Wayne County Indiana has a new blog and community portal that’s taking a different approach to local blogging and monetization.

While many local bloggers are relying on tips from bloggers in different parts of the world based on what works for them, Jack Humphrey is taking some cues from the locals in his area.

“There are different needs on the ground, depending on where you’re blogging,” says Humphrey, Editor of GoWayneCounty.com.  “Our area is comprised of several smaller towns, so we couldn’t just focus on one city like other local bloggers and get the population size needed to turn a profit in advertising.”

Humphrey says the area is also not as used to the latest technology in blogs and information portal functions.  “They are big-time Facebook junkies here and I’ve had to increase the site’s presence there considerably to get their attention,”  says Humphrey.

Advertising is another tricky subject.  Rather than a non-geo targeted niche, where there are enough advertisers who are savvy to purchasing advertising online, Wayne County’s local business owners need a more personal touch.

Humphrey is sending out sales representatives for his blog to walk prospective advertisers through their options for banner and text ads.  They prefer writing checks rather than checking out with a credit card online, even though the site uses OIO Publisher for full service ad purchase and management.

The final piece of the puzzle is publishing an offline version of GoWayneCounty.com.  “The residents in this area are less connected to the web than people in larger cities.  We are publishing the offline monthly newsletter, starting this month, to attract advertisers to what they are more comfortable with, get great advertising for the site, and hit those residents who currently read offline more than online.”

According to Humphrey, the combo of offline and online versions is the key to getting cheap exposure for the site and gaining advertising dollars needed to make the operation successful.

For Wayne County residents, who have little to choose from in either space, the new site and offline newsletter are welcome additions to the community.

“The people we are talking to on the site and in the community, both business owners and residents, are really excited about how things are developing,” Humphrey said.
